INGILIZCE SECOND CONDITIONAL: ALTERNATIVES FOR ‘IF’ – İKINCI ŞART KIPI: ‘IF’ İÇIN ALTERNATIFLER – TÜRKÇE KONU ANLATIMI

İkinci şart kipini şimdiki zaman ve gelecekteki hayali durumlar kakında konuşmak için kullanırız.

We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary situations in the present or future.

FORM: If + subject + past simple(if clause), subject + would + infinitive(main clause)

(ŞEKİL: If + özne + di’li geçmiş zaman(if tümcesi), özne + would + mastar(ana tümce))

For example: (Örneğin: )

If I won the lottery, I’d travel around the world.(not likely) (Piyangoda kazanırsam, dünya turuna çıkacağım.(pek ihtimali yok))

If she didn’t work so hard, she wouldn’t feel so exhausted.(she does work hard) (Bu kadar sıkı çalışmasa, bu derece bitkin hissetmezdi kendini.(o sıkı çalışıyor))

If we lived in Tokyo, we would live in a small apartment. (We probably won’t) (Tokyo’da yaşıyor olsaydık, küçük bir apartman dairesinde yaşıyor olacaktık.(Belki orada yaşamayacağız))

We can use could or might in the main clause instead of would to mean “would perhaps”. (Ana tümcede “belki olabilir” anlamında “would” yerine “could” veya “might” kullanabiliriz.)

eg. If the police caught me, I could deny everything. (ör. Polis beni yakalarsa eğer, her şeyi inkar edebilirim.)

If I really needed the money, I might keep it.(Paraya gerçekten ihtiyacım olsaydı, onu vermeyebilirdim.)

NB: Even if= it doesn’t matter if the situation in the if clause exists or not.

(NOT: Even if=it doesn’t matter, “if” tümcesindeki durumun var olup olmamasına bağlıdır. (?))

eg. I’d go to the party, even if I had to dress up.(Örnek: Partiye gideceğim, değişik giyinip süslenmem gerekse bile.)

In second conditionals we can say If I/he/she/it was… or If I/he/she/it were… (İkinci şart kipinde “If I/ he/she/it was… or If I/he/she/it were…” diyebiliriz.)

eg. If I was/were rich, I’d buy a house in London. (Örnek: Ben zengin olsaydım, Londra’da bir ev alırdım.)

Alternatives for If (“If” İçin Alternatifler)

We can use other words to replace if in conditionals.(Şart kiplerinde “if” in yerine koymak için başka kelimeler kullanabiliriz.)

Provided/ as long as = only if this happens (Provided/ as long as = only if this happens = sadece bu olursa)

eg. Provided you cleaned up afterwards, I’d let you have a party at my house.(Örnek: Sonradan senin ortalığı temizlemen şartı ile, benim evimde bir parti düzenlemene izin vereceğim.)

I’d tell you about it as long as you promised to keep it a secret.(Bana bunu bir sır olarak saklayacağını söz vermen şartı ile, sana olayı anlatacağım.)

Assuming = accepting that something is true. (Assuming = Bir şeyin doğru olduğunu varsaymak)

eg. Assuming the restaurant was affordable, I’d invite my friends there for lunch. (Örnek: Lokantanın makul fiyatlar sunduğunu varsayarsam, arkadaşlarımı oraya öğle yemeğine davet etmek isterdim.)

Imagine/Suppose = picture what something could be like in your mind (Hayal etmek/Sanmak = zihninizde bir şeyin nasıl olabileceğinin resmini yapmak)

We can use these words as an alternative for if in questions. (Bu kelimeleri “if” sorularına alternativ olarak kullanabiliriz.)

eg. Suppose you found a wallet full of money on the street, would you keep it?(Örnek: Sokakta para dolusu bir cüzdan bulduğunuzu varsayalım, onu alırmıydınız?)

Imagine you won a trip for two to Bali, would you take your mum?(Bali’ye iki kişilik bir gezi kazandığınızı hayal edin, annenizi yanınızda götürürmüydünüz?)

NB: We can use these alternatives for if in other conditionals to talk about real situations.(NOT: “if” yerine bu alternatifleri, başka şart kiplerinde, gerçek durumlar hakkında konuşmak için kullanabiliriz.)

eg. I’ll see you at 8pm, provided I don’t have to work late. (Örnek: Senin ile saat 20:00’de görüşürüz, geç saate kadar çalışmamın gerekmemesi koşulu ile.)

We’ll take a short trip to Melbourne, as long as it’s not too expensive.(Çok pahalı olmaması koşulu ile, Melbourne’e kısa bir gezi yapacağız.)

Let’s go to that nice cafe on the corner, assuming it’s still in business.(Haydi, köşedeki hoş kafeye gidelim, daha açık olduğunu varsayarak.)

We can say provided or providing and suppose or supposing.(“Provided veya providing” ve “suppose veya supposing” diyebiliriz.)

We can also use unless in conditionals to mean if not. (Şart kiplerinde ayrıca “değilse ” anlamında “unless” kullanabiliriz.)

eg. I wouldn’t work all weekend unless I really had to. (Örnek:Tüm haftadonu boyunca çalışmak istemezdim, gerçekten lüzumlu değilse.)

Unless I knew the streets well, I wouldn’t drive in the city.(Caddeleri iyi bilmedikten önce, şehirde araba kullanmazdım.)
