Overview of Modal Verbs

Should/ Shouldn’t/ Ought To/ Oughtn’t: obligations that are not strong (Should/ Shouldn’t/ Ought To/ Oughtn’t: güçlü olmayan yükümlülükler)

It is a good idea to do something, but not necessary.(Bir şeyin yapılması iyi bir fikir, ancak gerekli değil.)

eg. You should exercise regularly.(Örnek : Düzenli olarak eksersiz yapmalısın.)

Must/ Mustn’t: obligation.(Must/ Mustn’t: yükümlülük.)

eg. I must go on a diet. (Örnek : Ben bir rejime başlamalıyım.)

You mustn’t smoke in here.(Burada sigara içmemelisin.)

Must/ Can’t: deduction (Must/ Can’t: kesinti)

eg. The lights are on and his car’s in the driveway. He must be home.(Örnek : Işıklar açık ve arabası garaj youlunda.Evde olmalı.)

She can’t be forty, she only looks thirty! (O kırk yaşında olamaz, sadece otuz yaş gösteriyor!)

Can: ability/ permission/ general possibility (Can: yetenek/ izin/ genel olasılık)

eg. I can dance very well.(Örnek : Ben çok iyi dans edebiliyorum.)

Can I open the window?(Pencereyi açabilirmiyim?)

It can get very hot in summer in Perth.(Yazın Perth’de hava çok sıcak olabiliyor.)

NB: Can is not used to talk about specific possibilities.(NOT: “Can” belirli olasılıklar hakkında konuşmak için kullanılmaz.)

eg. Where are my keys? They could / may/ might be in the kitchen. NOT They can be in the kitchen.(Örnek : Anahtarlarım nerede?Onlar mutfakta olabilirler.)

Could: past ability/ permission/ possibility (Could: geçmişteki bir yetenek/ izin/ olasılık)

eg. I could swim when I was five.(Örnek : Beş yaşındayken yüzmeye başlamıştım.)

Could I open the window?(Pencereyi açabilirmiyim acaba?)

He could be running late.(Kendisi geç kalıyor olabilir.)

May/ Might: permission/ possibility (May/ Might: izin/ olasılık)

eg. May I go to the toilet?(Örnek : Lavaboya gidebilirmiyim acaba?)

Might I ask you a question? (formal) (Size bir soru sorabilirmiyim acaba? (resmi))

It may/ might rain later.(Sonra yağmur yağabilir belki.)

Past Modals (Geçmiş Gereklilikler)

must for obligation —> had to + infinitive (Yükümlülük için “must” —> had to + mastar)

eg. He had to wear a uniform to school. (Örnek : Okul için bir forma giymesi gerekiyordu.)

can —> could/ was able to  (Can —> yapılabilinirdi/ yapılabilindi)

eg. I could play the piano as a child.  (Örnek : Çocuk iken piyano çalabilirdim.)

She was able to escape to safety. (Güvenli bir yere kaçmayı başardı)

can’t, could, may, might and must for probability —> can’t have, could have, may have, might have and must have + past participle

(“can’t, could, may, might ve must” olasılık belirtmek için —> can’t have, could have, may have, might have ve must have + geçmiş zaman ortacı)

eg. He can’t have seen us waving at him.  (Örnek : O bizi ona el sallarken görmüş olamaz. )

She could have had an accident. ( Bir kaza geçirmiş olabilir. )

He might have broken a window. ( Bir pencere kırmış olabilir.)

She must have run to get here on time. ( Buraya zamanında yetişebilmek için koşmuş olması gerekir. )

should and ought to —> should have and ought to have + past participle(Should ve ought to —> should have ve ought to have + geçmiş zaman ortacı)

eg. You should have checked the train timetable before you left. (Örnek : Yola çıkmadan önce tren hareket saatlerini incelemiş olman gerekirdi.)
