INGILIZCE PRESENT SIMPLE / PAST SIMPLE PASSIVE – GENIŞ ZAMAN / PASIF DI’LI GEÇMIŞ ZAMAN – TÜRKÇE KONU ANLATIMI

There are two special forms for verbs called “voice”:
“Voice” (çatı) diye tabir edilen iki özel fiil şekli vardır:

Active voice (Aktif voice (çatı))
Passive voice(Pasif voice (çatı))

The “active voice” is the “normal” voice. This is the voice that we use most of the time. You are probably already familiar with the “active voice”.

In the “active voice”, the object receives the action of the verb:
(Aktif çatıda, tümleç fiilin işlevini üstlenir.)

Example (Örnek):
Cats eat fish.
(Kediler balık yerler.)

The “Passive Voice” is less usual. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb:
(“Passive Voice” kullanımı daha azdır.”Pasif çatıda”, özne fiilin işlevini üstlenir.)

Example (Örnek):
Fish are eaten by cats.
(Balık kediler tarafından yenilir.)

The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb:
(Etken fiilin tümleci edilgen fiilin öznesi haline gelir:)

Example (Örnek):
ACTIVE: Everybody drinks water. (water is the object )
(AKTİF: Herkes su içer. (su burada tümleçtir))

PASSIVE: Water is drunk by everyone. (water is the subject )
(PASİF: Su herkes tarafından içilir. ( su burada öznedir))

The structure of the passive voice is very simple:
(Pasif çatının yapısı çok kolaydır:)

Present Simple Passive: subject + am/is/are + past participle
(Pasif Geniş Zaman: özne + am/is/are + geçmiş zaman sıfat-fiili)

Past Simple Passive: subject + was/were + past participle
(Pasif Di’li Geçmiş Zaman: Özne + was/were + geçmiş zaman sıfat-fiili)

The main verb is always in its past participle form.
(Esas fiil daima daima geçmiş zaman sıfat-fiili şeklindedir.)

We use the passive when:
(Pasif halin kullanıldığı durumlar:)

-We want to make the active object more important
(-Aktif tümleci daha önemli göstermek istediğimiz durumlarda.)

-We do not know the active subject
(-Aktif özneyi bilmediğimiz durumlarda.)

-The active subject is obvious
(-Aktif öznenin kim olduğu belli olduğu durumlarda.)

Examples (Örnekler):
President Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. -Here the president being killed is the focus-
(Başkan Kennedy Lee Harvey Oswald tarafından öldürüldü. -Burada öldürülen başkan odaktadır-)

My wallet was stolen at the concert last night. -We don’t know who stole the wallet-
(Cüzdanım geçen geceki konserde çalındı. -Cüzdanın kimin tarafından çalındığını bilmiyoruz-)

The thief was arrested this morning close to the scene of the crime. -It is obvious that the police arrested him so we don’t need to mention it-
(Hırsız bu sabah olay yerine yakın tutuklandı. -Polisin onu tutukladığı açık, böylece bunu belirtmemize gerek yok-)

In passive sentences we can use “by” to say “who” or “what” did the action. This is called “the agent”.
(Pasif cümlelerde, eylemi kimin yada neyin yaptığını belirtmek için “by” kullanabiliriz.Buna “agent” (etken olan kişi/şey) denir.)

Example (Örnek):
This dress was worn by Marilyn Monroe. -Here; Marilyn Monroe is the “agent”-.
(Bu elbise Marilyn Monroe tarafından giyilmişti. -Burada Marilyn Monroe “agent”-)

To make questions in the passive voice we use the pattern: Question word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb
(Pasif çatı şeklinde soru sorabilmek maksadı ile şu yapı şablonunu kullanırız: Soru kelimesi + Yardımcı Fiil + Özne + Esas Fiil)

Example (Örnek):
Where is rice grown?
(Pirinç nerede yetişir?)

Where are Audi cars manufactured?
(Audi arabaları nerede üretilir?)

How much was the Picasso painting sold for?
(Picasso tablosu kaça satılmıştı?)

-The passive voice is used when focusing on the person or thing affected by an action.
(-Pasif çatı, bir eylem tarafından etkilenen kişi veya nesne üzerinde odaklanılacağı zaman kullanılır.)

Only verbs that take an object can be used in the passive voice.
(-Sadece tümleç alabilen fiiller pasif çatıda kullanılabilirler.)
