INGILIZCE PAST CONTINUOUS – SÜREKLI GEÇMIŞ ZAMAN – TÜRKÇE KONU ANLATIMI

In English we use “Past Continuous” to talk about an action taking place during a period of time. We usually use it with “Past Simple”.
(İngilizce’de “Past Continuous” bir olayın bir zaman dilimi süresince olmaya devam ettiğini belirtmek için kullanılır. Genellikle bağlaç yardımı ile “Past Simple” ile beraber kullanılmaktadır.)

FORM (Şekil):
was/were + verb + ing
(was/were + fiil + ing)

USE 1 : Interrupted Action in the Past
(Kullanım Şekli 1: Geçmiş zamanda yarıda kesilen eylem)

Use the “Past Continuous” to show that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the “Past Simple”. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.
(“Past Continuous” geçmiş zamanda yarıda kesilen (duraksatılan) daha uzun süreli bir eylemi belirtmek için kullanılır. Kesilme genellikle “Past Simple” formunda meydana gelir.)

I was cooking dinner when she phoned.
(O aradığında televizyon izliyordum.)

When the phone rang, she was cooking dinner.
(Telefon çalıdığında yazı yazıyordum.)

While we were cycling in the park, it started to rain.
(Biz piknik yapıyorken yağmur başladı.)

What were you doing when the police turned up?
(Deprem başladığında ne yapıyordun?)

I was wearing earplugs, so I didn’t hear my alarm.
(iPod dinliyordum, o yüzden yangın alarmını duymadım.)

You were not listening to the teacher when she gave us our homework.
(Fırını kapa dediğimde beni dinlemiyordun.)

While Alex was exercising, someone stole his bike.
(Dün gece John uyurken, birileri arabasını çalmış.)

William was waiting for me when I arrived at the station..
(Uçaktan indiğimizde Sammy bizi bekliyordu.)

While I was watching TV, the power went off.
(Email’i yazarken bilgisayar birden kapandı.)

A: What were you doing when you had the car accident?
(A: Bacağını kırdığında ne yapıyordun?)

B: I was texting a friend.
(B: Arkadaşıma mesaj gönderiyordum.)

USE 2 : Specific Time as an Interruption
(Kullanım Şekli 2 : Spesifik bir zaman dilimi)

In USE 1, described above, the “Past Continuous” is interrupted by a shorter action in the “Past Simple”. However, you can also use a specific time as an interruption.
(Yukarıda açıklanan kullanım şekli 1’de “Past Continuous” “Past Simple” formunda başka bir olay nedeni ile kesintiye uğramıştı)

Last night at 6 PM, I was travelling home.
(Geçen akşam saat 18:00’da, eve doğru yolda gidiyordum)

At midnight, I was still studying for my exam.
(Gece yarısı vakti, halen sınavıma çalışıyordum)

Yesterday at this time, I was sitting on a beach in Australia.
(Dün bu sıralarda, Avustralya’da bir plajda oturuyordum)

IMPORTANT (ÖNEMLİ):
In the Past Simple, a specific time is used to show when an action began or finished. In the Past Continuous, a specific time only interrupts the action.
(Geçmiş Zamanda bir eylemin ne zaman başladığı veya bittiğini gösteren belirli bir zaman kullanılır.Sürekli Geçmiş Zamanda, sadece belli bir zaman dilimi eyleme ara verdirir.)

Examples (Örnekler):
Last night at 6 PM, I travelled home.
(Dün akşam saat 18:00’de, eve doğru gitmiştim)

I started travelling at 6 PM.
(Saat 18:00’de yolculuğa başladım)

Last night at 6 PM, I was travelling home.
(Dün akşam saat 18:00’de, eve doğru gidiyordum)

I started earlier; and at 6 PM, I was in the process of travelling home.
(Daha önce başladım; ve saat 18:00’de, eve yolculuk etme sürecinde bulunuyordum)

USE 3 : Parallel Actions
(KULLANIM ŞEKLİ 3 : Paralel Eylemler)

When you use the “Past Continuous” with two actions in the same sentence, it means that both actions were happening at the same time. The actions are parallel.
(Sürekli Geçmiş Zamanı (Past Continous) iki eylem ile birlikte aynı cümlede kullanırsanız, bu her iki eyleminde aynı sırada meydana geldiği anlamına gelir. Eylemler birbirlerine paraleldir.)

I was swimming while he was sunbathing.
(O güneşlenirken ben yüzüyordum)

While Emily was cooking, Brian was doing his homework.
(Emily yemek pişirirken, Brian ev ödevini yapıyordu)

Were you listening when I was speaking to you?
(Ben seninle konuşurken sen beni dinliyor muydun?)

They were sitting by the pool, sipping cocktails, and talking about life.
(Onlar yüzme havuzunun kenarında oturuyor, kokteyllerinden yudumluyor, ve hayat hakkında konuşuyorlardı)
