INGILIZCE RELATIVE CLAUSES : DEFINING AND NON-DEFINING – İLGI TÜMCELERI: TANIMLAYICI VE TANIMLAMAYICI – TÜRKÇE KONU ANLATIMI

Defining Relative Clauses (Tanımlayıcı İlgi Tümceleri) 

We use Defining Relative Clauses to give important information about a person, place or thing.
Tanımlayıcı ilgi tümcelerini, bir kişi, yer veya şey hakkında önemli bilgi vermek için kullanırız.

Relative Clause = relative pronoun + subject + verb
(İlgi tümcesi = bağ zamiri + özne + fiil)

Relative Pronouns: (Bağ Zamirleri: )

We use “who” or “that” for people.
(“Who” veya “that” kişiler için kullanılır.)

Example (Örnek):
I saw the woman who lives next door.
(Karşıda oturan kadına rastladım.)

We use “that” or “which” for things
(“That” veya “which” nesneler için kullanılır.)

Example (Örnek):
This is the dress that I bought for $5.
(Bu $5’a aldığım elbise.)

We use “where” for places where an activity takes place.
(“Where” bir etkinliğin olduğu yerler için kullanırız.)

Example (Örnek):
Perth is the city where I grew up.
(Perth büyüdüğüm şehirdir.)

We use “whose” for possessives.
(“Whose” sahipliği belirtmek için kullanılır.)

Example (Örnek):
Jason is the boy whose parents own the newsagent.
(Jason haber ajansı sahiplerinin oğludur.)

NB: In defining relative clauses, you can omit “who, which and that” when the verbs in the main clause and the relative clause have a different subject.
(NOT: Tanımlayıcı ilgi tümcelerinde, “who, which ve that”, fiil esas vaziyette ise ve ilgi tümcesinin farklı bir öznesi bulunuyor ise, atlanabilirler.)

Example (Örnek):
He’s the man that I met yesterday. —> He’s the man I met yesterday.
(O dün rastladığım adam)

Here the subject of the main clause is ‘he’ and the subject of the relative clause is ‘I’ so it’s not necessary to use ‘that’.(Burada ana cümlenin öznesi “he” ve ilgi tümcesinin öznesi “I” , böylece “that” kullanımı gerekmiyor.)

 

Non-Defining Relative Clauses (Tanımlamayıcı İlgi Tümceleri)

We use Non-defining Relative Clauses to give extra information about a person, place or thing. Sentences with non-defining relative clauses have meaning with or without the clause.
(Tanımlamayıcı İlgi Tümcelerini, bir kişi, yer veya şey hakkında ilave bilgi vermek için kullanırız.Tanımlamayıcı İlgi Tümceleri ile kurulan cümlelerin, tümce ile beraber veya onsuz anlamları bulunmaktadır.)

Example (Örnek):
This building, which was designed by Gaudi, is a tourist attraction in Barcelona.
(Gaudi tarafından tasarlanmış olunan bina, Barcelona’da bir turist atraksiyonudur.)

Also makes sense without the clause: This building is a tourist attraction in Barcelona.
(Tümce olmadan da anlamlıdır: Bu bina Barcelona’da bir turist atraksiyonudur.)

Non-defining relative clauses must be put between commas, you can never leave out the relative pronoun, and you cannot use that in place of who or which.

(Tanımlamayıcı ilgi tümceleri virgüller arasında bulunmalı.Hiç bir zaman bağ zamirini atlayamazsınız, ve  “who” veya “which” yerine “that” kullanamazsınız.)

Examples (Örnekler):
Alice Springs, where my mother grew up, is in the middle of Australia.
(Annemin büyüdüğü Alice Springs, Avustralya’nın ortasındadır.)

My friend, who plays the trumpet, is in a concert next week.
(Trompeti çalan arkadaşım, gelecek hafta bir konsere katılacak.)

The sandals, which cost 99 TL, come in black, brown or red.
(99 TL fiyatı bulunan sandaletler, siyah, kahverengi ve kırmızı reklerde sunuluyor.)
