A phrasal verb consists of a verb and a preposition or adverb that modifies or changes the meaning; “give up” is a phrasal verb that means “stop doing” something, which is very different from “give”. The word or words that modify a verb in this manner can also go under the name particle.

Phrasal verbs can be divided into groups
(Öbeksi fiiller gruplara ayrılabilirler) :

Intransitive verbs or type 1 verbs
(Geçişsiz fiiller veya tip 1 fiiller)

– don’t take an object
(-bir tümleç almazlar)

Example (Örnek):
They had an argument, and they’ve split up now.
(Bir tartışmaları oldu, ve şimdi ayrıldılar.)

Inseparable verbs or type 2 verbs
(Ayrılmaz fiiller veya tip 2 fiiller)

– always have an object
(-daima bir tümleçleri bulunur)

– the object must come after the phrasal verb
(-tümleç öbek fiilinden sonra gelmeli)

Example (Örnek):
They are looking after their grandchildren.
(Onlar torunlarına bakıyorlar.)

Separable verbs or type 3 verbs
(Ayrılabilir fiiller veya tip 3 fiiller)

– always have an object
(-daima bir tümleçleri bulunur)

– if the object is a noun, you can put it in the middle or after the phrasal verb.
(-eğer tümleç bir isim ise, ortasına veya sonrasına öbeksi fiili yerleştirebilirsiniz.)

Example (Örnek):
I looked up the information up.
(Bilgiyi gözden geçirdim.)

– if the object is a pronoun, you must put it in the middle of the phrasal verb.
(-tümleç bir zamir ise, onu öbeksi fiilin ortasına yerleştirmelisiniz.)

Example (Örnek):
“I looked it up”. NOT “I looked up it”.
(“I looked it up”. “I looked up it” şeklinde DEĞİL)

Multi-word verbs or type 4 verbs
(Çoklu-kelime fiilleri veya tip 4 fiileri)

– have three words and always have an object.
(-üç kelimeleri bulunur ve daima bir tümleçleri bulunur.)

– the object is always after the phrasal verb.
(-tümleç daima öbeksi fiilden sonradır.)

Examples (Örnekler):
I tried to get out of doing the dishes.
(Bulaşık yıkamaktan kaçmaya çalıştım.)

I tried to get out of it.
(O şeyden kurtulmaya çalıştım.)

NB: Some type 1 phrasal verbs can become type 4 phrasal verbs by adding a preposition.
(NOT: Bazı tip 1 öbek fiilleri, bir edat eklenerek tip 4 öbek fiillerine dönüştürülebilirler.)

fall out —> fall out with
(bozuşmak —> onunla bozuşmak)

split up —> split up with
(ayrılmak —> onunla ayrılmak)
