 Imperatives

We often use imperatives to give very strong advice.
(“Imperative” genellikle çok güçlü tavsiye (nasihat) vermek için kullanılır.)

The positive imperative is the same as the infinitive.
(Olumlu “imperative” “infinitive”(mastar) ile birebir aynıdır.)

eg. Stop smoking. (Örnek : Sigara içme.)

Do more exercise. (Daha fazla egzersiz yap.)

Eat more vegetables. (Daha fazla sebze ye.)

The negative imperative is don’t + infinitive.
(Olumsuz “imperative” don’t + “infinite” yapısı ile kullanılır.)

eg. Don’t eat a lot of salt. (Örnek : Çok tuz yeme.)

Don’t drink too much alcohol. (Çok fazla alkol içme.)

Don’t be a couch potato. (Patates çuvalı olma.)

NB: We also use imperatives to give orders and instructions.
(NOT: “İmperatives” emir ve direktif vermek için de kullanılır.)

eg. Do your homework! (Örnek: Ev ödevini yap!)

Don’t show your partner your questions. (Sorularını partnerine gösterme!)

Note that an imperative sentence does not require a subject; the pronoun “you” is implied.
(“İmperative” cümleleri bir özneye ihtiyaç duymazlar; zamir olan “you” cümle içinde kastedilir.)

Should and Shouldn’t

We use should and shouldn’t to give advice.
(Should ve shouldn’t tavsiye vermek için kullanılır.)

We use should to say something is a good thing to do and shouldn’t to say something is a bad thing to do.
(Should yapılması iyi olan şeyleri, shouldn’t yapılması kötü olan şeyleri belirtmek için kullanılır.)

After should and shouldn’t we use the infinitive without to.
(Should ve shouldn’t dan sonra “infinitive” (mastar) “to” olmadan kullanılır.)

eg. You should eat salad more often. (Örnek: Daha sık salata yemelisin.)

You shouldn’t eat so many pizzas. (Çok pizza yememelisin.)

You should go to a gym twice a week. (Haftada iki kere spora gitmelisin.)

You should try to lose some weight. (Biraz kilo vermeyi denemelisin.)

You shouldn’t get too stressed at work. (İşte çok stress yapmamalısın.)

NB: To ask for advice we can say: What should I do?

(Not : Bir tavsiye isteğinde bulunmak için : Ne yapmalıyım?)

Phrase: Why don’t you…?

We use the question phrase Why don’t you…? to give advice.After Why don’t you…? we use the infinitive.
(Tavsiye vermek için “Why don’t you …? terimi kullanılır. “Why don’t you …? dan sonra mastar kullanılır.)

eg. Why don’t you see a doctor? (Örnek : Neden bir doktora gitmiyorsun?)

Why don’t you go home and go to bed? (Neden eve gidip yatağa girmiyorsun?)

Why don’t you take the day off? (Neden bir tatil (izin) almıyorsun?)
