My name’s Cari. I’ll be your teacher today and the topic we’re looking at today is past simple versus past continuous.

So let’s look at the grammar first.
İlk olarak, İngilizce dilbilgisi yapısına bakalım.

Of course, past simple is just subject plus verb 2 plus object whereas past continuous we use subject plus was/were plus verb  -ing plus object.
Tabi ki, İngilizce’de -di’li Simple Past Tense’te yapı “Özne + V2 (Fiilin ikinci hali) + nesne, diğer taraftan İngilizce’de Past Continuous Tense’te ise yapı “Özne + was/were + V-ing (Fiil –ing takısı alır) + nesne” şeklindedir.

So normally, we use these two together, but first let’s look at some different tenses on a timeline.
Normalde İngilizce’de bu iki zamanı bir arada kullanırız ancak zaman çizelgesinde farklı zamanlara bakalım.

For example;
Örneğin;

This is now and this is when you were born. Let’s say, 2007 you were married.
Bu çizgi şimdiyi, bu da doğduğunuz tarihi göstersin. 2007’de evlendiniz diyelim.

Which tense is this? Which tense does this represent? Of course, it represents past simple.
Bu hangi zamandır? Bu İngilizce’de hangi zamanı temsil eder? Elbette Simple Past Tense’i temsil eder.

Let’s look at a different timeline.
Haydi İngilizce’de farklı bir zaman çizelgesine bakalım.

Maybe now, maybe born and it’s tomorrow is an event, maybe tomorrow is married.

Which tense does this represent? It represents future tense.

Maybe our sentence is, tomorrow I’m going to get married.
Belki de İngilizce cümlemiz “Yarın evleneceğim” (tomorrow I’m going to get married) dir.

So future tense will look like this on a timeline.
Öyleyse İngilizce’de future tense (gelecek zaman) zaman çizgisinde bu şekilde görünecek.

Now, born, which tense is this where we don’t tell the person when it happened?
Şu an veya doğum vb ne zaman gerçekleştiğini söyleyemediğimiz durumlar İngilizce’de hangi zamana karşılık gelir?

This one can be present perfect.
Bu İngilizce’de Present Perfect Tense’e karşılık gelir.

For example;
Örneğin;

A sentence, I have learned English. OK, but when?
“Ben İngilizce öğrendim” (I have learned English). Tamam, ama ne zaman?

We didn’t say with this tense, present perfect.
İngilizce’de bu zaman yapısında (present perfect tense) olayın zamanını söylemedik.

Let’s look at one more.
Haydi başka bir İngilizce cümle örneğine daha bakalım.

Now, let’s say 2011 and the example is working at Speak English®.
Şimdi, İngilizce örnek cümle olarak diyelim ki 2011 ve “Speak English®’te çalışıyor”.

Which tense is this? This one will represent present perfect continuous.
Bu İngilizce’de hangi tense’tir? İngilizce’de Present Perfect Continuous Tense’e karşılık gelir.

I have been working at Speak English® since 2011. So represented on our timeline, present perfect continuous tense will look like this.
“Ben 2011’den bu yana Speak English®’te çalışıyorum.” (I have been working at Speak English® since 2011) Dolayısıyla, İngilizce’de Present Perfect Continuous Tense zaman çizelgemizde şu şekilde gösterilir.

Finally, let’s see what past continuous looks like on a timeline.
Son olarak, İngilizce’de Past Continuous Tense (Dili Geçmiş Zamanın Hikâyesi)’in zaman çizelgesinde nasıl göründüğüne bakalım.

So normally, we would use past continuous and past simple together.
İngilizce’de normalde past continuous ve past simple tense’i birlikte kullanırdık.

So, we’ll use past continuous, which will look like this and then we use past simple to represent, for example, here.
Past Continuous Tense İngilizce zaman çizelgemizde şu şekilde, daha sonra İngilizce’de Simple Past Tense’i  şu noktada kullanırız.

So maybe our sentence is, riding a bike, or riding a bicycle, and our past simple action is fell.
Belki İngilizce cümlemiz, riding a bike, veya riding a bicycle, ve İngilizce’de past simple aksiyonumuz fell.

So how can I make this sentence? First, I have to choose, do I want to use when or while?
Bu İngilizce cümleyi nasıl oluşturabilirim? İlk olarak, İngilizce’de “when” mi “while” mı kullanmak istediğimi seçmeliyim.

So what do these two mean? Normally, we would use when for a fast action and we would use while for a long action.

So riding a bike, would that be a fast action or a long action? Do you ride the bike, finish, stop? Or do you ride the bike for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, one hour?
Öyleyse, İngilizce “bir bisiklet sürmek” (riding a bike) eylemi kısa mı yoksa uzun süreli bir eylem midir? Bisikleti sürersin, bitti, dur mu? Yoksa bisikleti 5, 10 dakika, 1 saat sürer misin?

So riding a bike, normally, would be a long action and we’d use the time expression while.
Yani bisiklete binmek normal durumlarda İngilizce’de uzun bir eylem olarak kabul edilir ve “while” ifadesini kullanırız.

So we use long actions for which tense? Past simple or past continuous?
Öyleyse İngilizce’de uzun eylemleri anlatmak için hangi tense’i kullanırız? Simple Past mı yoksa Past Continuous mu?

With a long action, we’d use past continuous. With a fast action we would use past simple.
Uzun eylemlerde Past Continuous’u kullanırız. Çabuk meydana gelen eylemlerde Simple Past Tense’i kullanırız.

So let’s look at this sentence now.
Öyleyse haydi şu İngilizce cümleye bakalım.

When or while for riding a bike? Long action so we use while and we use past continuous tense.
İngilizce’de “riding a bike” için “while” mı yoksa “when” mi kullanmalıyız? Uzun bir eylem, yani “while” ve Past Continuous Tense’i kullanırız.

While subject was/were, let’s say I,  was verb -ing riding a bike, comma, then for our fast action, fell, we use past simple and you can use when, when I fell.
“While” + Özne + was/were + V-ing  (riding a bike) + , + çabuk meydana gelen eylem (fell) ve Simple Past kullanırız ve burada “when”i  “when I fell” şeklinde kullanabilirsiniz.

Yeah, so past simple sentence subject verb 2, no object here. So I have to choose, do I want to use while or when?
İngilizce’de Past Simple ile kurulan cümlede V2 (fiilin ikinci hali) kullanılıyor. Seçim yapmam gerekiyor, “when” veya “while” kullanmak istiyor muyum?

I cannot use both but it doesn’t matter, I can choose while and erase here.
İkisini birlikte kullanamam ama bu sorun değil; “while”ı seçip burayı silebilirim.

While I was riding a bike, comma, I fell. Or I can erase while, I was riding a bike when I fell. It doesn’t matter, you choose.
“Bisiklet sürerken” (While I was riding a bike) virgül “düştüm” (fell). Veya “whie”ı silip “I was riding a bike when I fell” (Düştüğümde bisiklete biniyordum). Sorun değil, kendiniz seçin.

I’ll leave it like this.
Bu şekilde bırakacağım.

So let’s look at another example.
Şimdi başka bir örneğe bakalım.

So to review, when, we use it for fast actions. While, we use for a long action.
Öyleyse gözden geçirirsek, İngilizce’de çabuk gerçeklerşen eylemler için ”when” kullanırız. İngilizce cümlelerde uzun eylemler için ”while” kullanırız.

When, fast action, which tense? Past simple or past continuous? We’ll use past simple. And while, the long action, will be past continuous.
When çabuk meydana gelen eylemler, hangi zaman? Past simple mı Past Continuous mu? Past simple’ı kullanacağız ve While’ı uzun olan “Past Continuous” olacak.

So let’s look at another timeline and write a sentence.
Haydi İngilizce’de başka bir zaman çizelgesine bakalım ve bir cümle yazalım.

For example;
Örneğin;

Let’s do work and then we’ll do fired which means they said you don’t work here anymore, sorry, goodbye.
Çalışma ve sonra işten atılma – “Artık burada çalışmıyorsun. Güle güle” denildiği zaman – ilgili  bir İngilizce cümle düşünelim.
So let’s use the long action, while. While I was working at, we’ll say, Speak English® , comma, yes that’s a fast action, you come to work, you make a mistake, they say bye-bye to you. So, we’ll use past simple. I was fired. And again, I can use when. So I can erase while. I was working at Speak English® when I was fired. No problem. It doesn’t matter.
Yani uzun süren eylemi kullanalım, “while”. “While I was working at Speak English® (Speak English®’te çalışıyorken), …evet bu İngilizce’de kısa süren bir eylem; işe gelirsin ve bir hata yaparsın, size güle güle derler. Öyleyse İngilizce cümlemizde past simple kullanacağız. “I was fired (işten kovuldum)”. Ve yine ”When” kullanabilirim. Yani ”While” i silebilirim.Ya da “While I was working at Speak English®, I was fired (Speak English®’te çalışıyorken işten kovuldum)” . Problem yok. Önemli değil.

So what happens if I have two things happening at the same time?
Peki İngilizce cümlede eğer elimizde aynı anda meydana gelen iki olay varsa ne olur?

I can use travelling, and maybe I can use painting. So maybe I‘m travelling all over Europe and in every city I want to make a painting. So, I do this for a long time. I’m travelling for a long time and I’m painting for a long time. I can use when? No. Because they’re not fast actions. I can only use while. They’re long actions and only past continuous.
“Travelling” (Seyahat) veya belki “Painting” (Boyama) kullanabilirim.Yani belki tüm Avrupayı dolaşıyorum ve her şehirde resim yapmak istiyorumYani bunu uzun bir sürede yapıyorum. Uzun bir zaman boyunca seyahat ediyorum ve uzun bir zaman boyunca resim yapıyorum.İngilizce cümlede When’i kullanabilir miyim? Hayır. Çünkü bunlar çabuk gerçekleşen eylemler değil. Bir tek “While”ı kullanabilirim. Bunlar uzun süren eylemler ve sadece Past Continuous.

While I was travelling, while I was painting. So I can use while here or here but I choose one so maybe I’ll take this. While I was travelling, comma, I was painting.
“While I was travelling (Seyahat ederken..)”, “While I was painting (Resim yaparken)” Yani İngilizce’de “while”ı burada veya şurada kullanabilirim fakat birini tercih etmek durumundayım. “While I was travelling, I was painting” (Seyehat ederken resim yapıyordum).

Let’s do just a couple more examples of some problems that you might have.
Haydi bir kaç tane daha bazı problemler yaşayabileceğiniz İngilizce örnek cümleler yapalım.

Maybe I’m not using a verb. Maybe I’m using an adjective like pregnant, for example. Ah, pregnant is not a verb, it’s an adjective. But it is a long time.And let’s say we’ll use while for the long time, but again there’s no verb.
İngilizce cümlede belki bir fiil kullanmıyorum. Belki “pregnant” (hamile) gibi bir İngilizce sıfat kullanıyorum. “Pregnant” kelimesi bir İngilizce’de fiil değil, bir sıfattır. Fakat bu uzun bir süreçtir. Ve uzun bir süreç için İngilizce cümlemizde “while”ı kullanacağız diyelim ama tekrar ediyorum orada bir eylem yok.

The verb is am, is, are and it’s not an action verb. So, for continuous tenses I can only use action verbs, so that’s a problem. What I can do is just make a past simple sentence.
İngilizce’de fiil “am, is, are”; bu hareket bildiren bir fiil değil. Yani, İngilizce’de continuous tense’ler için yalnız hareket bildiren fiileri kullanabilirim, öyleyse bu bir problem.Yapabileceğim tek şey “past simple” ile bir İngilizce cümle kurmaktır.

While I was pregnant, and again, I cannot say while I being pregnant, now you cannot do that, so while I was pregnant, then what can we say? How about another long action?
“While I was pregnant” (Ben hamileyken)”, şunu söyleyemem “While I being pregnant’’, öyleyse İngilizce cümlemiz “while I was pregnant” peki sonrasında ne diyebiliriz? Bir başka uzun süreli eylem nasıl olur?

Maybe, eating a lot. So while I was pregnant I,  and it was a long action, 9 months, every day, I was eating a lot of ice cream, for example.
Belki “çok yemek” (eating a lot). Yani İngilizce cümle “While I was pregranant (ben hamileyken)” –ve uzun bir süreçti, 9 ay– “I was eating a lot of ice cream (çok dondurma yiyordum)” mesela.

All right, so let’s look at one more concept before we finish.
Tamamdır, öyleyse bunu bitirmeden önce bir kavrama daha bakalım.

This concept of when and while. 
İngilizce’de “when” ve “while” kavramları.

When we’re using it with past simple and past continuous sentences, we are using it to tell people if it was a fast action or a long action. But maybe, we’re using it for a different concept. Maybe we are telling a story or a memory. Everybody starts with, one day, I blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
İngilizce’de past simple ve past continuous cümlelerinde kullandığımızda, insanlara onun kısa veya uzun bir eylem olup olmadığını anlatmak içim kullanıyoruz.Ama belki farklı bir konsept için kullanıyoruz. Belki bir hikâye veya anıyı anlatıyoruz. Herkes İngilizce cümlelere “One day, I” (bir gün ben) vs diye başlar.

But let’s tell the person more than one day.
Haydi dinleyiciye İngilizce’de bir günden daha fazlasını anlatalım.

When is one day? Was it ten years ago? Was it yesterday? Was it one year ago?
Bir gün ne zamandır? On yıl önce miydi? Dün müydü? Bir yıl önce miydi?

Let’s do something a little different.

Maybe you can say, when I was a child. So, is it a fast action? Being a child? Not really. We are a child for about 16, 17, 18 years, so this is a long action, but we’re using when. This is not a problem.
Belki “When I was a child (ben çocukken)” diyebilirsin. Yani, bu İngilizce’de hızlı bir eylem midir? Çocuk olmak? Aslında değil.16, 17, 18 yıl boyunca bir çocuğuz, yani bu uzun bir eylemdir fakat “when”i kullanıyoruz. Bu problem değil.

Let’s say that I use when.

When I lived in Alaska. Oh, there are commas here. Maybe it was only 6 months, maybe it was 6 years. I can change it to when or while. When I was living in Alaska. Or while I lived in Alaska. It’s not a problem because it’s all about what you’re thinking.
“When I lived in Alaska (ben Alaska’da yaşarken)”. Burada virgüller var. Belki sadece 6 aydı, belki 6 yıldı. Bunu İngilizce cümlelerde “when” veya “while”a çevirebilirim.“When I was living in Alaska (Ben Alaska’da yaşarken). Ya da “While I lived in Alaska, (Ben Alaska’da yaşıyorken)”. Was it a long time in Alaska? OK, use while. Was it a small time in Alaska? Use when. So this is your opinion and that’s not important. So we can use when or while.Typically with I was a child, everybody uses when. People don’t normally say while.

Let’s do a few more examples.

We can do when or while I was in university, so again, you can begin telling a story or telling a memory, you don’t need to use one day, we can use when I was a child or while I lived in Alaska or while I was in university.
“When / While I was in university (ben üniversitedeyken) şeklinde kullanabiliriz, böylece bir anı veya hikaye anlatmak istediğinizde “one day” (bir gün) kullanmanıza gerek yok; “When I was a child” (Ben çokcukken), “While I lived in Alaska” (Ben Alakska’da yaşıyorken), “While I was in university” (Ben üniversitedeyken) şeklinde kullanabiliriz.

If you want, you can do past continuous. While I was studying in university.Again you can play with this, you can do anything you want to here.
Eğer isterseniz, İngilizce cümleyi Past Continuous yapabilirsiniz.”While I was studying in university.” (Ben üniversitede okurken). Yine bu ifadelerde oynayabilirsiniz, burada ne isterseniz yapabilirsiniz.

So, finally, I’ll tell you a little story and give you some examples from the story.

I’ll begin my story with when I lived in Alaska, so this is a true story.

Gemilerde çok geç saatlere kadar çalışıyorduk. Bir gece eve geç geldik ve karnımız çok açtı. Akşam yemeği yememiştik, bu yüzden McDonald’s a gittik. Gittik ve biraz fast food aldık. There’s a bear at the top of the hill.” And I said “But our house is at the top of the hill.” So she said “Don’t go up there, there’s a bear.” And she drove away.
Evimiz bir tepedeydi ve biz tepenin aşağısındaydık. Tepeye çıkarken,…Tepeye çıkarken, aniden 4×4 araçlı bir kadın yanımızda durdu ve “Yukarı çıkmayın. Orada bir ayı var! Tepede bir ayı var.” dedi. Ve ben de “Ama bizim evimiz tepenin üstünde” dedim.Kadın, tekrar : “Tepeye çıkmayın. Orada bir ayı var!” dedi ve sonra aracıyla uzaklaştı.

So, I was very shocked, I was surprised and we were holding Macdonald’s bags and I thought maybe bears like Macdonald’s, but my husband and I decided that we should continue walking up the hill to our house. So again, we continued.
