Welcome to the Speak English online video lessons. My name is Cari. I’ll be your teacher today and our topic will be three modals.
Speak English® online video derslerine hoş geldiniz. Benim adım Cari. Bugünkü öğretmeninizim ve konumuz İngilizce’de üç kip (modal).

Our first modal is… our second modal… and finally… be allowed to,  be supposed to and be able to.
İlk kipimiz… İkinci kip… ve sonuncusu…. İngilizce’de Yapabilmek (be able to), İngilizce’de Yapmasına izin verilmek (be allowed to), İngilizce’de Yapması beklenmek (be supposed to).

So first, I would like to start with be able to.
İlk olarak, İngilizce’de “be able to” ile başlamak isterim.

The easier modal for be able to is can, and the negative, can’t.
İngilizce’de “be able to” kipinin daha kolay hali “can”dir, olumsuz hali “can’t”dir.

So I’ll begin with an example.
Öyleyse bir örnek ile başlayacağım.

All right, our friend Bob… has five fingers, hopefully, OK, our friend Bob has a problem. He has a lot of problems but, ah, the major problem is, unfortunately, Bob has no nose.
Peki, arkadaşımız Bob beş parmağa sahip, umarım öyledir ve arkadaşımız Bob’un bir problemi var. Aslında birçok problemi var ama esas problem şu ki Bob’un burnu yok.

So, he, if we can make a sentence with can and can’t, Bob can’t breathe. Maybe you were thinking Bob can’t smell. Very sad.
Eğer bu İngilizce cümleyi “can” ve “can’t” ile yaparsak: Bob can’t breathe (Bob nefes alamıyor). Belki de Bob’un koklayamadığını da düşünmüşsünüzdür. Çok üzücü.

Ah, maybe now, I take away /Bob’s arms. Now, Bob can’t do many things, ah, for example, Bob can’t write. Bob can’t play basketball. Very sad, many problems.
Şimdi Bob’un kollarını çıkaralım. Artık Bob pek çok şeyi yapamıyor, mesela yazı yazamaz. Bob basketbol oynayamaz.Çok üzücü, pek çok problemi var.

Now, maybe I take Bob’s eyes. Bob can’t see. I take Bob’s… and now Bob can’t eat. It’s all very sad. Now finally, Bob died.
Şimdi Bob’un gözlerini silelim. Bob göremez.Bob’un ….’sını çıkaracağım, artık yemek yiyemiyor. Tamamen çok üzücü. Sonunda, Bob öldü.

So if we can take this easy modal, can and can’t, now we have the same modal, same meaning,
Eğer bu kolay kip İngilizce’de “can ve can’t” e bakarsak, aynı kip ve aynı anlam bulunur.

But can, can’t would be informal and be able to would be more formal, but it’s the same meaning.
İngilizce’de “can” ve “can’t” resmi değildir “be able to” daha resmidir, fakat anlamı aynıdır.

So we can easily change these sentences from can, can’t to be able to.So you can see we’re using be, am, is, are.
Öyleyse bu cümleleri kolayca “can” ve “can’t”tan “be able to”ya çevirebiliriz. Gördüğünüz gibi, “am”, “is”, “are”ı kullanıyoruz.

So, for example, he has no nose, OK.We understand that.
Örneğin, onun burnu yok (he has no nose), tamam mı? Bunu anlıyoruz.

So Bob am, is, are, is, negative, not able to breathe or smell. Same here, he is able to write, and negative, he isn’t able to write. So very easily, we can change these sentences from informal to formal.
Bob am, is, are, olumsuz, “not be able to” breathe or smell. Aynısı burada İngilizce’de “He is able to write (o yazabilir)” ve olumsuzu İngilizce’de “he isn’t able to write (o yazamaz)”. Çok kolay bir şekilde bu İngilizce cümleleri resmi olmayan durumdan resmi duruma çevirebiliriz.

Now, for example, all right, here we have Bob again. No problems. Bob has no problems.
Şimdi, örnek olarak tekrar Bob var.Problem yok.Bob’un hiç problemi yok.

Bob has a Efes, OK, so, he is drinking alcohol. He is forty years old.All right, this is no problem.
Bob’un bir Efes’i var , alkol içiyor. O 40 yaşında.Tamam, bunda bir sorun yok.

He is able to drink alcohol and our new modal, if you remember, be allowed to. He’s forty years old, so, in the law in Turkey, Bob, he is also allowed to drink alcohol. He’s forty years old, the police say it’s OK for Bob to drink alcohol. His mother says it’s OK for Bob to drink alcohol.
O alkol içebilir ve eğer hatırlıyorsanız şimdiki kip (modal) “be allowed to”O 40 yaşında, yani Türkiye’de kanunlara göre Bob’un alkol içmesine izin verilir. O 40 yaşında ve polis onun alkol içebileceğini söylüyor.Annesi onun alkol içmesine izin verir.

Now if I change Bob to fourteen years old, what happens?
Şimdi eğer Bob’un yaşını 14 olarak değiştirirsem, ne olur?

He is able to drink alcohol, because he has hands, he has a mouth, so he can physically drink alcohol, but, he isn’t allowed to drink alcohol because now Bob is fourteen years old.
Elleri ve ağzı olduğu için alkol içebilir (he is able to drink alcohol), fiziksel açıdan alkol içebilir ancak alkol almasına izin verilmez çünkü o şu an 14 yaşında.

Bob’s mother says he cannot drink alcohol. The police say Bob cannot drink alcohol.
Bob’un annesi o alkol içemez der.Polis, Bob’un alkol içemeyeceğini söyler.

Let’s look at another example.
Haydi başka bir örneğe bakalım.

Bob is at home and Bob is playing with his playstation. OK, not a very good artist.
Bob evde ve Playstation’ı ile oynuyor. Hiç iyi bir ressam değilim bu arada.

So Bob is fourteen years old. He’s at home. He’s playing with his playstation and let’s say it is 14.00. So it’s 2 o’clock in the afternoon and Bob’s mother says it’s OK, you can play the playstation right now.So, he is allowed to play playstation at 14.00. His mother says it’s OK. His father says it’s OK.
Yani Bob 14 yaşında. Evde.Playstation’ı ile oyunuyor ve haydi diyelim ki saat 14.00 Yani öğleden sonra 2 ve Bob’un annesi ona oyun oynayabileceğini söylüyor. Onun saat 14:00’de Playstation ile oynamasına izin veriliyor. Annesi tamam diyor. Babası tamam diyor.

But, let’s change the time to 22.00. Now, its very late at night and he should be asleep.So now his mother says no, you cannot play playstationIt’s very late at night.
Fakat saati 22.00 olarak değiştirirsek. Artık gece çok geç bir vakit oldu ve uyuması gerekiyor. Bu yüzden annesi ona hayır playstation oynayamazsın diyor. Gece geç saat.

So, he isn’t allowed to play playstation, unfortunately.
Maalesef, Playstation ile oynamasına izin verilmiyor İngilizce’de (He isn’t allowed to play playstation)

Let’s do one more example.
Başka bir İngilizce cümle örneği yapalım.

All right, Bob has a gun. All right, he is, let’s say, eighteen years old and he isn’t allowed (and) to kill anyone. Right, this is, the police say you cannot kill anyone.
Tamamdır, Bob’un bir silahı var. Diyelim ki o 18 yaşında ve onun kimseyi öldürmesine izin verilmiyor. Evet, polis kimseyi öldüremezssin diyor.

But let’s say Bob’s friend is very angry, and Bob’s friend also has a gun and Bob’s friend wants to kill Bob, so now he is allowed to kill his friend because his friend wants to kill Bob.So now the law is different.Now everything changes.

So, just remember that is and -ed is important.
İngilizce cümlelerde is” ve “-ed” in önemli olduğunu unutmayın.

What happens if we change it to I we change this to am and if we change it to we becomes are. So technically, this is a passive modal because of the -ed/, so always remember to do -ed as well.
Eğer onu İngilizce’sinde “I” ile değiştirirsek ne olur, bunu İngilizce’sinde “am” olarak değiştiririz ve eğer İngilizce’sinde “we” olarak değiştirirsek, onu İngilizce’sinde “are” olarak değiştiririz.“-ed” den dolayı teknik açıdan bu bir İngilizce edilgen çatılı bir kiptir ve her zaman “-ed” i kullanmayı unutmayın.

So we have one more modal to talk about today and that is be supposed to.
Bugün İngilizce’de bahsedeceğimiz bir kip daha var ve bu “be supposed to (olması beklenen)”.
But before we talk about be supposed to, let’s look one more time at be allowed to.
İngilizce’de “be supposed to” dan bahsetmeden önce,  İngilizce’de “be allowed to”ya bir kez daha bakalım.

So I have some examples of some laws from different countries around the world, and these are actually some very crazy laws. They’re crazy, but true.
Dünyanın farklı ülkelerinden bazı kanun örnekleri var ve bunların bazıları aslında gerçekten çılgınca kurallar. Çılgıncalar ama gerçek.

So I will read one of these laws to you and then you can guess which country do you think has this law.
Bu kurallardan bir tanesini size okuyacağım ve sonra siz hangi ülkenin bu kanuna sahip olduğunu tahmin edin.

So our first one, for example, in which country, OK, /are you not allowed to jump off a building?And we’ll put our preposition here, in which country are you not allowed to jump off a building?
İlk örnek, hangi ülkede sizin bir binadan atlamanıza izin verilmez?İngilizce’de Preposition’u buraya koyarız: “In which country are you not allowed to jump off building? (Hangi ülkede bir binadan atlamanıza izin verilmez?)”.

So I’ll let you think about the answer… this one the answer is America, specifically New York. I think it’s crazy because if you jump off a building, you will probably die but I guess this is a law that became necessary in New York.
Cevap için düşünmenize müsaade edeceğim…Bu ülke Amerika, tam olarak New York şehri.Bence bu çılgınca çünkü eğer bir binadan atlarsanız ölürsünüz fakat bu kurala New York’ta gerek duyulduğunu tahmin ediyorum.

How about another one, for example, in which country is it illegal for a taxi to carry wild dogs and dead people? So in which country is it not allowed for a taxi to carry wild dogs and dead people? The answer is France.Unfortunately, this is not allowed in France.
Başka bir taneye ne dersiniz? Mesela, hangi ülkede bir taksinin vahşi köpek ve ölü insan taşıması yasa dışıdır? Yani hangi ülkede taksinin vahşi köpek ve ölü insan taşımasına izin verilmez?Cevap Fransa.Ne yazık ki Fransa’da buna izin verilmiyor.

A couple more… in which country are you not allowed to leave your house with no underwear? This is not allowed in Thailand, I’m sorry.
İki örnek daha…Hangi ülkede iç çamaşırsız olarak evinizden çıkmanıza izin verilmez? Buna Tayland’da izin verilmez, üzgünüm.

And finally, in which country is it not allowed to get on the internet?And in this country, if you get on the internet, you can go to prison.And this country would be Burma. In Burma, you are not allowed to get on the internet.
Son olarak, hangi ülkede internete girmeye izin verilmez? Bu ülkede eğer internete girerseniz hapse gidebilirsiniz. Bu ülke Burma. Burma’da internete girmenize izin verilmez.

So finally, let’s look at be supposed to. Again it’s a modal and it’s very similar grammar, but this one the meaning is very different. This one is similar to expect.
Son olarak, İngilizce’de “be supposed to”ya bakalım. Bu da İngilizce bir kiptir ve dilbilgisi yapısı çok benzerdir, fakat anlamı farklıdır. Bu İngilizce beklemek (expect) eylemine benzer.

What do people expect from you? For example, in Turkey, if you go to a wedding in Turkey, what are you supposed to bring?
İnsanlar sizden ne bekler? Mesela, Türkiye’de bir düğüne giderseniz, ne götürmeniz beklenir?

So think about if you go to a wedding in Turkey, I know the first thing I learned is that you are supposed to bring gold. Especially if I really like this person and if they’re important to me, I am supposed to bring them gold in Turkey.
Türkiye’de bir düğüne gittiğinizi düşünün, yapmanız beklenen ilk şeyin altın götürmek olduğunu biliyorum. (You are supposed to bring gold)Özellikle eğer o kişi seviyorsam ve eğer onlar benim için önemliyse, benim onlara altın götürmem beklenir.

Ah, but what about other countries, though?
Peki diğer ülkelerde durum nasıl?

For example;
Örneğin;

We’ll do a yes/no question, are you supposed to bring gold in America?In America, no, you are not, right, you are not supposed to bring gold in America, to a wedding.
Evet/hayır sorusu, Amerika’da altın getirmeniz beklenir mi? Amerika’da hayır, sizden beklenmez, Amerika’da bir düğüne altın getirmeniz beklenmez.

In other countries, there is very different wedding traditions.
Başka ülkelerde çok değişik düğün adetleri vardır.

Ah, for example, in which country are you supposed to paint the bride all white? The woman, she wears all white and they paint her face white. In which country?In Japan you are supposed to paint the bride all white.A very interesting tradition.
Mesela hangi ülkede gelinin tamamen beyaza boyamanız beklenir? Gelin tamamen beyaz giyer ve yüzünü beyaza boyarlar. Hangi ülkede? Japonya’da gelini tamamen beyaza boyamanız beklenir. (In Japan you are supposed to paint the bride all white.)Bu, çok ilginç bir gelenektir.

And many countries will have their interesting traditions also
Ayrıca pek çok ülkenin de ilginç gelenekleri vardır.

So let’s look at our friend Bob again.
Tekrar arkadaşımız Bob’a bakalım.

Let’s say that Bob is in China and he’s at a, a dinner party for business, maybe it’s a work dinner party.
Varsayalım ki Bob Çin’de ve iş amaçlı bir akşam yemeği eğlencesinde şu an, belki de bir iş yemeğinde.

So, in China, can he, can he drink alcohol at a dinner party in China?So yes, he can, and he is able to drink alcohol because he has arms, he has a mouth, so he is able to drink alcohol at a business party in China. Is he allowed to?He is allowed to drink alcohol.

It’s OK in China and the law says it’s OK, and is he supposed to drink alcohol in China at a dinner party for business? In China, yes, if you are at a business dinner in China you are supposed to drink alcohol.They want you to drink alcohol at a dinner party.
Çin’de buna izin verilir ve kanunlara göre yasaldır, peki Çin’de onun iş yemeğinde alkol içmesi beklenir mi? Evet, eğer Çin’de bir iş yemeğindeyseniz alkol içmeniz beklenir. Bir iş yemeğinde alkol içmenizi isterler.

But, if I change the country to, for example, America, what should we change?
Eğer ülkeyi Amerika olarak değiştirirsem, neyi değiştirmem gerekir?

For example, 
Mesela,

He is able to drink , this is the thing, in America, of course, you are able to drink. Is he allowed to drink? Of course, he is allowed to drink, but is he supposed to drink alcohol at a dinner party for business in America?No, we have to change this.Because the culture is different. So he’s not supposed to drink alcohol at a dinner party in America for business.
“O alkol içebilir”, bu Amerika’daki durumdur; Amerika’da tabi ki içki içebilirsiniz. Onun içki içmesine izin verilir mi? Elbette içmesine izin verilir, peki, Amerika’da bir iş yemeğinde içki içmesi beklenir mi? So I’m sure in Turkey we have many, many traditions also.
Eminim ki Türkiye’de de pek çok gelenek vardır.

Ah, for example, if you are at a party in Turkey you are supposed to bring possibly dessert or some food and what do you do when you open the door and you come into the house?
Mesela, eğer Türkiye’de bir partideyseniz, tatlı veya biraz yiyecek getirmeniz beklenir ve kapıyı açtığınızda ve eve girdiğinizde ne yaparsınız?

You are supposed to, first you take off your shoes. So these are very important traditions and every culture will have these traditions.
İlk olarak ayakkabınızı çıkarmanız beklenir. Bunlar çok önemli geleneklerdir ve her ülkede bunlar olacaktır.

In America, when you come to a dinner party you are not supposed to take off your shoes.
Amerika’da bir partiye geldiğinizde ayakkabılarınızı çıkarmanız beklenmez.

So again, very interesting cultures, all around the world.
Dünyanın her yerinde çok ilginç gelenekler var.

So today we have looked at three modals.

We have looked at able to, allowed to and supposed to. And again if we look at the infinitive we use be able to, be allowed to and be supposed to.
İngilizce’de “be able to”, “be allowed to”, “be supposed to” konularına baktık.ve İngilizce’de “be supposed to” , ” be allowed to” ve ” be able to” kiplerinin yalın kullanımlarını inceledik.

Of course you will change this depending on I, you, he, she, it, we and they.
Elbette ki bunları İngilizce I, you, he, she, it, we ve they’e  göre değiştireceksiniz.
