INGILIZCE INDIRECT QUESTIONS – DOLAYLI SORULAR – TÜRKÇE KONU ANLATIMI

In more formal situations we often use indirect questions because they sound more polite.
(Daha resmi durumlarda, daha kibar bir ifade tarzı olduğu için, sıkça dolaylı sorular kullanırız.)

To make a question more polite we often begin with an indirect question phrase such as:
(Bir soruyu daha kibar bir hale getirmek için, sıkça aşağıda gösterildiği gibi dolaylı bir soru cümle dizilimi ile başlarız:)

Could you tell me…?
(Bana söyleyebilirmisin…?)

Do you know…?
(Biliyormusun…?)

Have you any idea…?
(Herhangi bir fikrin var mı…?)

Can you tell me…?
(Bana söyleyebilirmisin…?)

To make a direct question indirect we use the form:
(Doğrudan bir soruyu dolaysız hale çevirmek için, şu şekli kullanırız: 

“Indirect question phrase” + “question word/if/ whether” + “main clause”.
(“Dolaysız soru cümle dizilimi” + “soru kelimesi/ if / whether” + “ana tümce”. )

The word order in the main clause changes to “subject + verb”.
(Ana tümcedeki kelime sıralaması “özne + fiil” olarak değişir.)

Examples (Örnekler):
Where is the post office? —> Do you know where the post office is?
(Postahane nerede? —> Postahane’nin nerede olduğunu biliyormusunuz?)

What’s the time? —> Could you tell me what the time is?
(Saat kaç? —> Bana saatin kaç olduğunu söyleyebilirmisiniz?)

Does this train go to Ankara? —> Can you tell me if this train goes to Ankara?
(Bu tren Ankara’ya gidiyor mu acaba? —> Bu trenin Ankara’ya gidip gitmediğini bana söyleyebilirmisiniz acaba?)

Is there a bank nearby? —> Have you any idea whether there is a bank nearby?
(Yakınlarda bir banka bulunuyor mu acaba? —> Yakınlarda bir bankanın bulunup bulunmadığı konusunda herhangi bir fikriniz var mı acaba?) 

NB: If the direct question begins with an auxiliary verb (no question word), add “if” or “whether” after an indirect question phrase to make the question indirect.In indirect questions, “if” and “whether” are the same.We don’t use “if” or “whether” with “Do you think…?”
(NOT: Doğrudan soru bir yardımcı fiil ile başlıyorsa eğer (soru kelimesi değil), soruyu dolaylı hale getirmek için, dolaysız soru cümle diziliminden sonra “if” yada “whether” ekleyin. Dolaysız sorularda, “if” ve “whether” aynı anlama gelirler.“Do you think…?” ile beraber “if” veya “whether” kullanmayız.)

Example (Örnek):
Do you think he’s gone to London? NOT Do you think if he’s gone to London?
(Sence o Londra’ya gitti mi? —> “Onun Londra’ya gittiğini sence düşünüyormususn acaba?” ŞEKLİNDE DEĞİL)
